Children are going to school but are not Learning. This was the bitter truth that vChalk wanted to change. Since its inception in March 2015, vChalk has already won 3 awards for its contribution in the field of education, and this is just a glimpse of the many others to come!

The idea is simple; vChalk wants to help children who are usually the first ones in their family to have access to an English school.

Humble Beginnings:

For their pilot project they tested a group of 345 local kids and when they responded well, they tested another 1061 kids, only to observe that their ways of training were showing positive results.

They have successfully made use of an innovation based on an MIT proven approach, which not only improves learning outcomes but is also very cost effective. This approach is called “teaching at the right level” and is at the core of vChalk classes.

In the early stages of research, vChalk found that there was no dearth of schools. However there was a problem right at the heart of the education system. Co-founder Daniela F.Gheorge said, “It made me angry to know that 4 out 10 children in India struggle with the most basic concepts of English and math, despite having received an elementary schooling of 4-5 years.”

Problem solving the vChalk way!

In order to tackle this particular problem they came up with a unique solution. They started identifying people from the community who could engage as “off-school Teachers”(for example: a trained local housewife) who could tutor the kids after school. vChalk trains and mentor them. On the other hand in-school teachers support them and improve their English speaking skills. There is a liberal use of technology in all their educational activities. Technology made it easier to make the vChalk classes more interesting, interactive and also tracking the growth of these kids. The growth is recorded and reported to the parents of the kids.

What makes vChalk different?

The notable feature of this project is that, vChalk aims at building an entire community through this initiative. In time, this project will create a network of well trained community teachers and bright and educated children.
