Blood donation is the most generous, beneficent and paramount form of charity . But this cause hardly ever receives the attention it deserves . The Red Cross Society in India reports information, that portrays a sad and pitiful picture of blood banks in India .
According to statistics every year our nation requires about 5 Crore units of blood, out of which only a meager 80 Lakh units of blood are available . There is a need for blood every 2 seconds ! And we are not at all equipped to satiate this need .
Despite all the scientific advancements , there is no found substitute for human blood . Which only implies that ,patients in need of blood have to rely on the mercy of voluntary donors . Often, kin of the patients are desperate and resort to the ‘black market’ and other such unethical means to meet their shortages . All in all ,it can be concluded that , being a patient in need of blood, can be very unpleasant and distressing in India .Which is why ,certain pre-meditated measures need to be taken to ensure adequate and plentiful supply of blood in all blood banks. This will not only make the journey of the patients easier but also less painful .
The 14th of June every Year is celebrated as World Blood Donation Day . It goes without saying that if you haven’t donated blood yet ,there is no better day to start ! After all, today it might be your blood saving someone else’s life , tomorrow it could very well be someone else’s blood saving yours .
Impact Guru gives you a few reasons to make a contribution today ,by donating a little of your valuable blood and time .
1) It’s Free

2) It has health benefits
It might seem a little odd that donating blood to someone else ,can do your body good too ! But it is medically proven that donating blood has some substantial health benefits like
– Weight Loss
Yes you heard that right ! One time blood donation helps you shed 650 Kcal. This can aid you in your body weight control measures. However, blood can be donated safely once in two or three months and not more frequently. This will depend on your health status and your blood haemoglobin and iron levels.
– Reduced Risk of Cancer
High levels of iron have been implicated in cancer. Theoretically, donating blood frequently will reduce the amount of iron deposits in your blood thus cutting the risk of cancers. More research is going on to find strong evidence on this one. But it is widely observed and realised phenomenon
– Better Bone Marrow Generation
Frequent blood donations make bone marrow healthy and hence helps in a constant supply of red cells, plasma and platelets. The body replenishes the elements given during a blood donation – some in a matter of hours and others in a matter of weeks.
3) It’s easy
Blood donation is no rocket science .All it takes is the prick of needle and a few minutes at most . Worldwide, the average time taken for the whole process of donating blood is about 10 minutes ,that’s all !
Blood donation drives and camps are regularly carried out for the convenience of blood donors .Even otherwise , if you chose to go to a hospital to donate blood, it virtually involves no difficult and confusing paperwork .It is a completely hassle free affair
4) Nothing is a waste or loss
Well, when you donate money or other resources there is always a certain mistrust and scepticism about how your donation will be used .That constant voice at the back of your head that keeps telling you that your contribution is being wasted or misused . But when you donate blood you get the assurance that Every Drop Counts .
Even within blood there are 4 transfusable products that can be derived : Red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate.
Typically, two or three of these are produced from a pint of donated whole blood.
Here’s an overview of how your blood could be used :
|EXAMPLES OF BLOOD USE|
|1. Automobile Accident||50 units of blood|
|2. Heart Surgery||6 units of blood / 6 units of platelets|
|3. Organ Transplant||40 units of blood / 30 units of platelets|
|4. 20 bags of cryoprecipitate||25 units of fresh frozen plasma|
|5. Bone Marrow Transplant||120 units of platelets/ 20 units of blood|
|6. Burn Victims||20 units of platelets|
5) You emerge feeling like a hero
There are no two ways about it .The gift of blood to a patient , is the gift of life itself . Every time you donate blood ,you become a saviour to a kid dying of cancer , or a woman who has lost too much blood during pregnancy , or a teenager involved in a serious bike accident . There are thousands everyday who are on their knees looking for a fair amount of blood for their near and dear ones ,and when you donate you become the answer to all their prayers . And that is a privilege nothing else can give you .
It is said that one turn of blood donation can save upto 3 people ! It’s incredible to know how much power we hold within those few drops of blood .When we decide to use this power , we can transform lives, one drop at a time .This is reason enough to enter a blood bank ,the next time you see one !
