Losing people we care about is a part of life, something almost all of us experience from time to time. Some, however, are rarer and more cruel than others. In a world of widely prevalent deadly diseases, cancer is one of the most unavoidable and agonising. The disease which is synonymous with a painful death is the subject of widespread fear and taboos. Even though major strides have been made in the treatment of the disease, the deep belief that cancer is deadly still persists.

Whenever the earth-shattering news is broken upon the patient that he/she has cancer, he/she starts counting days in fear and trepidation. However, due to enormous advancements in medical science, today it is possible to fight this disease if detected at an early stage.

Impact Guru has compiled stories,from various news articles,of famous personalities across India who have triumphed against the deadly disease and raised hope among the public that a fight is worth the effort. Cancer can happen to anybody, and you do not need to be a celebrity to be a fighter.

June 5th is celebrated as the cancer survival day. On this special occasion, we list down some of the strong men and women who have suffered this horrible disease and survived. It’s their indomitable spirit that inspires us to fight through the tragedies of life.

Yuvraj Singh

After winning the 2011 World Cup for India and being named the Player of the Tournament, Yuvraj Singh was diagnosed with Stage 1 Lung Cancer. He underwent treatment in the US. While he was battling against this dreaded disease, his fans and perhaps the entire nation joined hands in unison to pray for his recovery. Yuvi was victorious in this battle and came back with a roar. He’s been active on the field and also wrote a book about his struggle with cancer “The Test of My Life”. His foundation has launched an initiative YouWeCan, a campaign aimed at fighting cancer at the root level.

Legendary actress Mumtaz who started out as a child actor with Sone ki Chidiya back in 1958, is best known for her performances in the film Khilona. In early 2000, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.  She took it as a challenge and underwent numerous chemo sessions winning the war against cancer at 54. Now 68, Mumtaz still has that yesteryear’s charm that she wooed everyone with. In an interview with The Times of India, Mumtaz has been quoted saying,  “I don’t give up easily. Even death will have to fight me.”


Lisa Ray

The award-winning model and actress who starred in Canada’s Oscar-nominated film Water was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma(a cancer of plasma cell) in 2009. She underwent a stem cell transplant which was successful and in July 2010, Lisa was finally declared a survivor. After her recovery, Ray launched “Make Myeloma Matter” media campaign, which helped raise awareness about the disease worldwide. She actively advocates the stem cell technology and its benefits.


Anurag Basu

Anurag Basu, the famed director of Barfi  suffered from acute promyelocytic leukemia, a type of blood cancer in 2004. Doctors predicted that his chances of survival were bleak.

But rather than getting pessimistic about it, Anurag Basu looked at cancer in the eye and did not let it affect his life and behaved as if he suffered from a common cold and not cancer. He even wrote the scripts of Life in a Metro and Gangster during this time and directed some parts of Tumsa Nahin Dekha from the hospital. He put up a brave face throughout his ordeal and came out of it as if nothing ever happened.

The charming actress was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer at the age of 42. She took the battle against cancer and underwent treatment in New York. She took to social media, braving the diseases and posted pictures from her chemo sessions. Having successfully defeated cancer, the actress has become a crusader for those battling the disease by creating awareness.

In an interview with Indian Express, she said, “There is a big psychological pressure when you have cancer. There is always this fear of the disease coming back. If my position of being a celebrity helps the cause, I would surely do my bit”

  1. Here is only a brief description of my experience with cancer. My wife was diagnosed with ovarian cancer ten years before her death at age sixty seven. During those ten years prior to her death, I provided essentially all care for her comprised of a vast array of methods to suit her medical condition. This is my story in hopes other husbands and significant others can somehow be comforted and know that their struggles are shared with millions of survivors.
